THE AMERICAN CHESTNUT TREE:
A SCIENTIFIC, SOCIAL, AND SYMBOLIC PERSPECTIVE
Session 3, April 15: FROM SYNECDOCHE TO SYMBOL Robert Longsworth, Professor of English Emeritus, Oberlin College, will conclude the series with reflections on the chestnut as a figure that has a rich and fascinating place in art and literature. Over time and continents, the chestnut has been employed by major writers for varied purposes, by artists in vitally different ways, and in popular culture from song to ceremony. The American chestnut has a strong—if enigmatic—claim on the modern imagination. The link to Professor Longsworth's presentation contains links to the artwork he uses as examples.
NOTE: Videos of the presentations are available to Kendal residents on the KORA website Kendal Connects.
