More Gazebos Are Coming to the Arboretum

gazebo locations on aerial

In order to provide shade, a place to rest and a place to contemplate nature and the plants in our
collection two gazebos will be erected before the end of 2025. The basic form of each is shown
in the inset in the map above. The example is not a photograph of the actual gazebo but intended
to provide a concept of what will follow. A paved path will be constructed to provide access to
the gazebos from either the perimeter path of the covered walkway. They will be round and about
10 feet in diameter with stops designed to prevent wheelchairs rollators and from moving
beyond the edges.

The first gazebo will be located just north of the intersection of Kendal Drive and the two-lane
road leading to the Heiser Community Center, as shown on the map. Besides providing shelter it
is the starting point of a trail that leads past the prairie at the base of Wildflower Hill and to the
chestnut collection. The prairie changes constantly with each season. The chestnut collection
features native American Chestnuts (Castenea denta), Chinese chestnuts (Castenea molliscema),
a hybrid between these species and Millenial Chestnuts, American Chestnuts selected by
breeding to better tolerate the blight (Castenea dentata, 'Millennium').

The second gazebo will overlook Farmer Pond. This pond was restored approximately 8 years
ago after it had been almost completely obliterated by silt. The project was performed by Mad
Scientists Associates, LLC.
The pond is home to aquatic birds, amphibians, fish and native
plantings. For details consult the links on the Tree Data, Walks and Maps tab.
